How do you know when someone is from Texas?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

I sort of know this feel. Substitute Cook Out for Blue Bell and craft beer for queso, and you have Virginia.

Texas has the best food in the US, and im pretty impartial. I've lived in the NE, Midwest, the South, the PNW, and TX. Visited 40 of 50 states. Nothing beats TX. Also the prices beat all the others, including the south.

I can’t have Whataburger anymore because Celiacs. I thought this would be a good thing for my health but I’ve pretty much just replaced it by doubling my taco intake.

I can’t even our state’s food sometimes. Can’t. Even.

The one upside to living in WA was the food. I could eat seafood all day, err’day. Salmon! Salmon everywhere!

I can sort of do that with Mexican/Tex-Mex*, but BBQ? Gotta do quality over quantity there. If I have a string of visitors who all want all the meats, all the time, flergh. Mediocre BBQ is the worst, too. If I eat too much of that, I feel like a 9,000-lb behemoth and start to wonder if the vegans have it right.

*I’m in a chicken burrito rut to prove this. Sometimes it’s a chicken salad, but that’s really just an exploded burrito with more lettuce in lieu of a tortilla when you’re ordering it from a burrito joint.

I have a morbid curiosity about other states’ Mexican food. I will eat any attempt at queso you put in front of me like it’s my duty.

Nope to the absolutely not on their BBQ. Nope. I’m fairly certain that’s where the garbage idea that hush puppies are a BBQ side originates, and no, sir, I don’t like it.

Ice cream = work out harder, that’s all.

Also, it comes from a cow, so it’s like, healthy or something. Sort of like how beer is a vegetable.

I’m wary of the “Mexican” food outside a certain radius in *our* state. I once had chips and salsa at a restaurant in the DFW area where the “salsa” was literally canned stewed tomatoes dumped into a bowl. That’s it. It was awful.

I think the only other states that I’d trust the Mexican food would be all the states that actually border Mexico — New Mexico (awesome hatch chiles, I hear), Arizona, California. Other than that? Meh.

Every state has good Mexican food. You just need to go to the strongly Hispanic neighborhoods. There is one here in Indy called Tacos 46 and it's the best thing ever.

That’s why I’m so glad I’m close to the border here in California. A friend of mine lives in Washington (fellow Opponaut), but his wife is from LA so he knows what good Mexican food tastes like, or has an idea, so he knows the truth when he goes to “Mexican” places up there. What’s funny though is even here in California relatively close to the border (I’m an hour north of LA), you get a lot of people who don’t know what good Mexican food is. A lot of the Mexican food places here are whitewashed, and white people here LOVE it. They’re stupid. Thankfully I have access to more than a few holes in the wall that make good Mexican food. I’m not a big fan of BBQ places though because it’s either total shit, or just meh. It’s never amazing. And they’re always expensive as shit.
